2021 – the year we all get vaccinated, attend half a dozen rebooked weddings, change out of the sweatpants and start eating healthy again… maybe it’s also the year to debut the smile you’ve always wanted?
Whether you had braces as a teen but then were a bit lackluster wearing your retainer (unfortunately, we see it a lot, don’t feel bad), or have never had any orthodontics and just want to even out a couple of gaps or overlapping teeth, our team of dental professionals can work with you to achieve the perfect smile.
Our central Connecticut dentist’s office is located just off I-91 in Windsor, CT, near Manchester and Hartford. We’ve been providing full-service family and cosmetic dentistry in the area for over four decades and are Invisalign partners.
How Invisalign Works
A popular and hidden alternative to metal braces, Invisalign works through a series of clear plastic trays. You and your dentist will make a plan for your teeth, identifying any overbites, overlapping, gapping, or crooked teeth. They’ll then use 3D technology to take a virtual cast of your mouth, based on which they will develop the series of plastic aligner trays for you to use. You’ll usually get a few months of trays at once, which you’ll swap out depending on how much you’re wearing them.
The recommended option would be to wear your Invisalign trays as much as possible, only taking them out to eat and drink. You’ll see results much faster this way, and will usually be able to ‘graduate’ to new trays every two weeks. If you’re trying to do this option, it’s best to aim to have your trays in your mouth 22 hours a day.
The other option that some people, especially adult professionals prefer, is to only wear your trays at night. Your progress will be slower this way, and you’ll only swap out trays every four weeks. However, if you’re self-conscious about the trays or work in an environment with exacting rules about your appearance, this might be the best option for you.
Whether you’re wearing the trays day and night or just at night, you’ll also need to adopt a cleaning regime for them, as well as for your teeth. Any time you eat or drink, you need to take the aligners out and fully brush and floss before you put them back in. Your trays will also need cleaning regularly using mouthwash or a denture care solution. Your orthodontist can offer guidance on a cleaning regime when they fit your trays.
Every few months, you’ll come back into the orthodontist for another dental exam and to see how your teeth are responding, and get your next set of trays. In general, the trays will feel quite tight when you first graduate to the next set, and will gradually become looser as your teeth move into position.
